When looking for some authentic Peruvian food in Cuzco, look no further than the Cuy dish. In Spanish, the word “Cuy,” means Guinea Pig, and it's considered a traditional delicacy in the Andes region. Cuzco is known for its veritable smorgasbord of Cuy options, but some places that serve it aren't for the squeamish, as the dish is often served complete with its head, eyes, and teeth still attached!
Some fantastic restaurants to visit while in Cuzco include Cicciolina, Restaurante Illary, and A Mi Manera. Cicciolina is a stylish restaurant, known for its cocktail selection, spicy entrees, and excellently prepared alpaca slices. Across the courtyard, A Mi Manera presents itself as more of a casual dinning experience. It's known for its meat-stuffed peppers, traditionally prepared Cuy, and a long list of South American wines.
If you haven't found something that strikes your fancy yet, then you should ask around for a place that serves Timpu, or Puchero. If you're there in February, then you'll most likely be able to find it, as it's a popular treat during Carnaval. The dish consists of beef, bacon, and lamb head (yes that's right), all broiled and served with an array other fruits and vegetables. When in Cuzco, eat bold!
