The statue of Cristo Blanco (White Christ) is located on top of a hill high above Cuzco, Peru, and is only about a ten minute hike from the Sacsayhuamán ruins. The statue depicts Christ extending his arms to the sides, not unlike the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio. However, the Cristo Blanco is not nearly as tall.
Made from white stone, the statue is also illuminated during the night time, so you can see it from Cuzco. Cristo Blanco was built by a group of Christian Palestinians that were seeking refuge in Cuzco in 1945. It was a symbol of their gratitude toward the city, and was their parting gift when they finally returned to their home country. Since then, the statue has served as a reminder to the people of Cuzco that good deeds do not go unnoticed.
The location of Cristo Blanco is well-known for the statue, but also for the view of Cuzco it offers. Many tourists visit this location just so they can get beautiful panoramic photos of Cuzco's cityscape. Because the view is so nice, it's also great place to go and have a picnic! This is a must-see in the city of Cuzco.
