Constructed in the mid-16th century, the Iglesia y Monasterio (Church and Monastery) de Santa Clara was designed by famous South American architect Brother Manuel Pablo. The exterior is interesting because the bottom stones are a collection of precisely cut Inca blocks that provide support for basic and rudimentary stone work that makes up the higher portions of the walls. Centered around a single nave, the building features a decadent gold-sheeted altar. The antiquity of its bell tower can be observed by the presence of plants and flowers that have taken permanent residence within the structure itself.

Historically, the Church and Monastery of Santa Clara is significant because it housed the daughters of the Spanish Conquers of the 16th century. Today it is home to a closed order of nuns, and is known for its collection of mirrors.

This is a great place to visit if you are fascinated with Peruvian history and ancient architecture. It is also one of the only buildings of its kind in the general area. The Church and Monastery of Santa Clara was renovated in 2005 in an effort to preserve its ancient beauty. Admission is free to the public, and the church is open from 6 am to 6 pm every day. This is a great spot to feel closer to the Incas that once inhabited Peru!
