River rafting is one of Peru's most popular recreational activities. There are several establishments in and around the Cuzco area that offer great rafting tours at affordable prices. These guides are very knowledgeable and will help you navigate the class two and three rapids of the Urubamba River in the Sacred Valley. This famous river also meanders through several Incan ruins, which presents many opportunities for exploration.
Peru for Less is a great company to go through for a full day of rafting the Urubamba. They offer a seven-hour trip for the equivalent of €50 per person ($69 or £43). This includes all the necessary equipment, an overall briefing of rafting procedures, lunch at a traditional restaurant, and transportation to and from the river. Another notable service to check out is Apumayo Expediciones, which offers a wider range of river tour options, including single-day and multiple-day adventure and cultural excursions.
Vilcanota is a segment on the Urubamba that is particularly popular for river rafting, and is located just southeast of Cuzco. The Urubamba is separated into an upper area and a lower area by a notorious whitewater crevasse called Pongo de Mainique. Over this beautiful canyon, there is also inconspicuous little Inca Bridge, which serves as a secret entrance to the ancient city of Machu Picchu!
