The historic center of Cuzco, Peru, was designed and used by the Incas. Meticulously preserved, this area of the city is situated just west of Jardin Sagrado (Sacred Garden). While the ancient inhabitants began the construction of this celebrated area, Cuzco locals have continued to make additions throughout the centuries.

Start your visit in the Main Square, a central locations that dates back to the 12th century, when soldiers would have large celebrations after victorious battles. After that, head over to the Church of the Company (Iglesia de la Compañía). Apart from it being a gorgeous building, the church also is the resting place of several important figures from the Spanish conquest. Next go to the Convent and Church of Santa Catalina (Convento e Iglesia de Santa Catalina). Built in the mid-17th century, this church played an important role in the development of Cuzco, and has an illustrious museum to fill you in on all the historic details.

The Acllahuasi translates to the “Temple of the Virgins.” This place was used to house hundreds of beautiful women chosen to serve as the eternal wives of Inti, the Incan sun god. There is a great deal of exciting places to visit in Cuzco's historic center, so be sure to pretty much devote your whole day to it!
