Cusco, Peru and the Lost City of the Incas, Machu Picchu, together provide the focal point for much of the trekking in Peru. There are a great many Inca trail treks wandering along mountain ridges and crossing high passes, all providing the adventurous traveller many options to get far from the madding crowd.
A relatively new experience is the 9 day Choquequirao to Machu Picchu trek, which starts in the small village of Cachora before descending to the Apurimac Canyon and then climbing back up to around 3000 metres to visit another, lesser known Lost City, Choquequirao. From there, the adventurous visitor strikes out over little travelled ground, spending another 4 days to reach the more famous Machu Picchu.
