No specific vaccinations are required while visiting Peru. However, immunizing against typhoid, malaria, yellow fever and Hepatitis A and B are advised. It is also recommended to take a course of rabies injections before visiting Peru. Diarrhoea and altitude sickness are common, and therefore, it is always safe to use bottled water.
Medical care is good, but expensive in Peru. Obtaining travel medical insurance before travelling is recommended.
Theft is a major problem in Peru. Be very cautious while in crowded areas, while travelling on public transport and especially after dark. Sexual assaults are also quite common. Women should take extra care. Tourists should always avoid political gatherings and demonstrations as these have the possibility of getting violent.
When in Peru, avoid wearing any native Indian clothing. Never photograph any military equipment and avoid homosexual behaviour in public.
