Huancayo is the capital of Junin, Peru’s central highland region. It is also the capital of Huancayo Province. Huancayo is located beside the Mantaro Valley and the total population of the city is around 323,054. This city is the commercial and cultural centre of the Peruvian Andes region. Wankas were the earlier inhabitants of the city. Huancayo lies 10,659 feet over the sea level. Apart from being a commercial centre, the city is also famous for crafts and festivals of the towns in and around the city. Limean Airport and Francisco Carle Airport of Jauja are the two airports that serve the city, but the latter is the most preferable one for travelers. Victor Alberto Gil Mallma, the famous Peruvian folk singer, Josue Sanchez, painter, Rodolfo Cerron Palomino, Linguist and Juan Parra Del Riego of Huancayo are the notable people of Huancayo. During 1969, the city was badly affected by two earthquakes and destroyed a railway, bridges and hundred houses. About thousands of people lost their lives in that calamity.
