Located in the rainforest of Peru, Iquitos is the capital of the Loreto Region and the Maynas Province. Merely 106 meters above sea level, the city is more than 3,000 kilometres from the mouth of the Amazon.
Downstream from the confluence of Amazon’s two main headwaters, Río Ucayali and Río Marañón, Iquitos is a major port in the Amazon Basin. With a population of 367,000 inhabitants, it is regarded as the largest in the world that cannot be reached by road.
The climate of Iquitos is hot and humid, with extremely high humidity levels all year round. November to May witnesses the wet season, with the river reaching its highest point in May; it is at its lowest in October.
Originally, Iquitos was known for its rubber industry. Today, lumber, oil, rum and beer industries have taken precedence.
