The Larco Museum is commonly recognized as the most important tourist sight in Lima. It is located in the Pueblo Libre district, in an impressive 18th century colonial mansion built over a 7th century pyramid.
It was created in 1926 by the famous Peruvian archaeologist Rafael Larco Hoyle to share his passion for archaeology and pre-Columbian civilizations.
The museum overlooks a colorful garden that won the prize for the best garden in Lima in 2009 in its category. It has recently been renovated and displays a remarkable collection of pre-Columbian art including crowns, earrings, nose ornaments, garments, masks and vases, and jewelry finely wrought in gold and decorated with semi-precious stones.
In the erotic gallery you will be intrigued by all the Moche ithyphallic jars and by the ceramic pots showing, in a very certainly realistic and humoristic way, their sexual habits.
The Larco museum is also one of the few museums in the world that allows tourists to go into the storage area. In total, there are more than 45,000 pieces to enjoy, making the Larco Museum an unforgettable and unique experience.
