Colonia del sacramento: Attractions and more...

Lined with cobbled streets in Portuguese style architecture, the historic portion of Colonia is reminiscent of old Lisbon. Different from the Spanish colonial sites, this Portuguese settlement with its winding streets and colourful homes is a delight to explore.

Visiting the Barrío Historico, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers a glimpse into the history of the region. Built in 1745 to fortify the walled city, Puerta de la Ciudadela marks the beginning of the historic district.

Bastion del Carmen, a cultural center that was once a factory and wharf, El Faro, a lighthouse built from the ruins of Convento de San Francisco, Museo Portugues, housing Portuguese items and furnishings, Museo Municipal, housing combination of Portuguese and Spanish artefacts illustrating the colonial life, and Museo Español, with replicas of pottery, clothing and maps depicting colonial life, are among the popular places of interest.
