Artigas, capital of the Department of Artigas, is located in Uruguay. The Department of Artigas is the meeting point of three borders with Argentina and Brazil. The city of Artigas is the farthest city from Uruguay’s capital city Montevideo.
Established on 12 September 1852 by Don Carlos Catala, Artigas is named after the founding father of Uruguay, Jose Gervasio Artigas.
The city is a major commercial and marketing centre of Uruguay. Tourism and agriculture also account for a large portion of the annual economy.
