Durazno serves as the capital of the Department of Durazno. Situated in the centre of Uruguay, the city of Durazno is located to the left of Yi River. With a population of around 30,500 inhabitants, Durazno is a major commercial centre.
Durazno enjoys a fairly uniform climate throughout the year. Extremes in temperatures are quite rare, and high humidity and fog are common.
Founded by the Portuguese during the eighteenth century, Durazno was initially known as San Pedro de Durazno, as a tribute to the Brazilian emperor of that time. The villa was given the city status on 13 June 1906.
The city of Durazno serves as a major urban and commercial centre. Agriculture and cattle farming are two important sources of economy in the city. The city also serves as an important communications centre.
