Las Piedras is situated in the Department of Canelones in the southern part of Uruguay. It lies on the northern side of the capital and the largest city Montevideo of Uruguay. The literal meaning of the Spanish word “Las Piedras” is “The Stones.”The city is known for great independent struggles. In 1811, the Uruguayan revolutionaries fought against the Spanish forces at Las Piedras. In the battle, the Spanish forces were defeated and Las Piedras became independent. It was a remarkable victory, which eventually led to the establishment of independent Uruguay.The population of Las Piedras is 69,222 as per the 2004 census. It is known for its ostrich farms and horse races. One can reach Las Piedras by roadways and railways, which connects Montevideo with Rivera and Tacuarembó.
