Maldonado, founded in 1755, is the capital of Maldonado state in Uruguay. The population of Maldonado is 54,603. It is in the southeastern part of the country. Maldonado borders River Plate and Punta Del Este on the southeast, San Carlos on the north, Pan de Azucar and Piriapolis on the west. Maldonado got its name from Don Francisco Maldonado, the Tennient bailiff of the ship "Santa María del Espinar," captained by Sebastian Gaboto, in the year 1530. The name was later changed to San Fernando de Maldonado to honor King Ferdinand VI of Spain.The city was constituted by the strong effort of the governor of Montevideo, Joaquin de Viana in 1755. In 1806, the British captured Maldonado. When Maldonado State was formed in 1828, Maldonado became its capital. Maldonado is famous for its beautiful beaches and it attracts tourists from all over the world. The city is well connected by rail, road, and air.
