Tourist Guide Melo
Melo, capital of the Department of Cerro Largo, is located in the north-eastern part of Uruguay. Situated along the border with Brazil, Melo is located in the central part of Cerro Largo. With a population of around 50,500 inhabitants, the city is situated over the edge of the Conventos Stream.
Melo enjoys a fairly uniform climate throughout the year. Extremes in temperatures are quite rare, and high humidity and fog are common.
Founded in 1795 by Agustin de la Rosa who was an officer with the Spanish Army, Melo was once known as the Melo Village. After Uruguay achieved its independence, Melo was declared as the capital of the Cerro Largo Department.
Tourism is the largest money earning sector in the city of Melo. The city also serves as a main distribution centre for wood, textiles, meat and dairy products.
