Mercado del Puerto, better known as Port Market, is a picturesque area of the city of Montevideo that sells handcrafts, artefacts and other similar items.
Port Market is a wrought-iron superstructure that harbours numerous restaurants and cafes. Weekends are perfect to visit this place, as the market is crammed with locals and musicians who liven up the area.
Visitors can enjoy the Argentine style barbecued meat served at most of the restaurants. The restaurants also serve typical Uruguayan dishes as well.
The place has been popular for 150 years and has been host to such people as Figari, Gardel and everyone who ever lived in the city in the last century.
The market is one of the icons of the city and a must for every tourist. One can also shop for old books, antiques, old records, plants, pets, clothes and sunglasses.
