Though Montevideo is a safe city, it is advisable to be careful with personal belongings and expensive items.

Also avoid visiting the suburbs and marginal districts as these areas can be quite unsafe for tourists. The Montevidean Carnival is a long carnival that goes on for the whole month of February.

People flock to the beaches to enjoy the carnival. The month of February could be a bad period to visit Montevideo if you want to explore the city and enjoy city life in particular.

Cerro, a neighboring district of Montevideo should not be visited at night as it can be unsafe. It is not safe to carry large amounts of cash when you are touring around the downtown area.

Stay alert when walking on the streets as there are many potholes and no warnings or fencing around signalling them.

Pickpockets are not a major threat in Montevideo but it is always safe to stay watchful as there have been few incidences of pick-pocketing.
