Paysandu, capital city of the Department of Paysandu, is located in Uruguay. Situated on the north-western side of Montevideo, Paysandu is located along the Uruguay River. With a population of around 73,200 inhabitants, the city of Paysandu is the third largest city in the world.
The city of Paysandu has a warmer and humid climate than the rest of the country. Extremes in temperatures are quite rare, and high humidity and fog are common.
Officially founded in 1772 by a priest, Policarpo Sandu, and twelve Indian families, the name Paysandu was taken from the Indian word ‘pay’.
The economy of Paysandu is mainly based on agriculture, cattle rearing and forest activities. The city is also hoof wine, sugar, vegetable oils, meat and cement.
