Located in the citrus growing region of western Uruguay, Salto lies on the east bank of the Rio Uruguay and is the capital of the department of Salto. With a population of about 99,072, it is the second largest city in Uruguay.
Salto is connected to the Argentine city Concordia by the Salto Grande Bridge, atop the Salto Grande Dam. Its port is the terminus for the shallow-draft vessels that ply the Uruguay River.
Characterised by a temperate climate, the warmest months are January and February and the coldest month is June. It rains evenly throughout the year.
Salto’s major industries include wine production and orange-drink bottling. Since the region is well suited for pasture, cattle and sheep ranching is equally extensive. With the best vineyards in the country, orange and tangerine production is also important.
