Surface: The total land area covered by Uruguay is 173,620 sq km.

Population:  Uruguay has about 3,460,607 (July 2007) inhabitants, of which 88% are Caucasian, 8% Mestizo and 4% African–American.

System of government: Uruguay has a constitutional government.

Capital: Montevideo, with an approximate population of 1,325,968 (2004), is the capital of Uruguay.

Religion: Roman Catholicism is the dominant religion of Uruguay.

Official Language: Spanish is the official language of Uruguay.

Government: Uruguay has a constitutional government.

Climate: Uruguay experiences a warm temperate climate.

Units of measure and electricity: The metric system is used in Uruguay. Official electrical unit is 220 V, 50 Hz.

Time Zone: Uruguay standard time is GMT – 3.

Currency: Uruguayan Peso (1 € = 32.96 UYU).

Travel documents required: Visa free stay, up to three months, is allowed for nationals from the UK, the US, Australia, Canada and the EU. Nationals from all other countries require a valid passport and visa.
Economy

Uruguay has a middle-income economy, dominated by the State service sector, export-oriented agricultural sector and the industrial sector. The economy underwent severe crisis as a result of the crisis in the neighbouring countries of Argentina and Brazil. The devaluing of peso and increase in unemployment has exacerbated the situation.

Being less expensive than Argentina, visitors can find comfortable accommodations at approximately 25 €, in Uruguay.
