Helicoide de Caracas
This peculiar landmark is built in Roca Tarpeya, in the S. Augustin Parish and is one of the most recognisable landmarks on the skyline of Caracas.
Designed by Architect Jorge Romero, it is roughly triangular in shape and, being built on the slopes of a hill, it looks vaguely pyramidal.
It was originally meant to be a Shopping Center, but was abandoned because of political reasons and left unfinished and vacant for decades.
Several proposals were made for its use after completion, including a heliport, headquarters for the Ministry of the Environment, and a community center. Eventually it became the headquarters for the DISIP (internal intelligence agency / political police), which has long had a reputation for abuse and human-rights violations.
