Colonia Tovar, a city in Tovar Municipality, is located in Aragua, Venezuela. Situated around 60 km from the nearest city, Caracas, Colonia Tovar is mainly known for its German influence. With a population of around 6,000 inhabitants, the city is a popular Venezuelan tourist destination.
The city experiences a mild subtropical climate characterized by a dry season which lasts from December to April and a wet season from May to November.
Initially founded in 1843 by German settlers, the city was named after Martin Tovar y Ponte. The city remained isolated from the rest of Venezuela for years, and this helped the native inhabitants preserve their culture and traditions.
Tourism is the largest money-earning sector. The city is known for its culture and traditions and most of the inhabitants are descendants of Germans.
