Wildlife
There exists a rich and varied wildlife in the delta. The mammals that can be seen in natural habitats in the delta are as follows – dolphins, manatee, giant otter, agouti, capybara, capuchin monkeys, red howler, ocelot, puma and jaguar.
Various species of birds like hummingbirds, weaverbirds, harpy-eagles, hawks, falcons, egrets, cormorants, kingfishers, caciques, toucans, parrots, macaws and hoatzin are also found.
There are innumerable reptiles, amphibians and fish species like catfish, stingrays, piranha, turtles, cayman, iguana, coral snakes, fer-de-lance, vipers, boas and anaconda.
Natural habitats
Aquatic and terrestrial habitats are found in various forms in the delta. There is a mixed tropical rainforest that has towering palm trees. One can also find orchids, fruit trees and bromeliads.
In the moist regions of the canopy it is possible to see arboreal ferns. There exist aquatic plants in the grassland swamps and marshes. Estuarine waterways near the Atlantic Ocean have a high density of mangroves.
