Tourist Guide Porlamar
Porlamar, located in Nueva Esparta in Venezuela, is the main city on Isla de Margarita. Home to a large number of restaurants and shops, the city serves as the commercial centre of the island. With a population of around 210,000 inhabitants, Porlamar is home to around one third of the island’s population.
The city experiences a mild subtropical climate characterized by a dry and a wet season. The wet season lasts from May to November and the dry season from December to April.
The city was discovered in the early fifteenth century, almost forty years after Christopher Columbus sailed through the island. The city was a fishing village until air travel was introduced in the island. The city was granted a free port status in 1973.
Porlamar is one of the main centres of European and Venezuelan tourism. Fishing is also widely practised.
