Liberty Island, New York

A view from Battery Park, the southern tip of Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty, also known as Liberty Enlightening the World, it looks really small. Only approaching it by boat you can slowly notice it's grandeur. Gift that the French gave to the Americans, it is now a symbol of freedom and a welcome message to all immigrants arriving by sea, it is the first visible image of New York.

‘Liberty Enlightening the World’ is the actual name of the statue and it was gifted to the United States by France. This copper statue was sculpted by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi and Alexandre Gustave Eiffel. Today, the Statue of Liberty is... more one of the most famous icons of the United States. Visitors can take a boat ride called the Circle Line ferry starting from the Battery Park to reach the Liberty Island. To reach the top of the statue, visitors can climb or take an elevator to the liberty’s crown. The National Park Service conducts guided tours which last for half an hour. Various souvenir shops are to be found here along with a museum in the pedestal which has exhibits on the statue and its history. The New Torch Exhibit displays the original torch which was replaced.

A gift from France, the statue is beautiful. You can go to the top of her torch and see the whole of New York. The statue, a gift to the United States from the people of France, is of a robed... more female figure representing Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom, who bears a torch and a tabula ansata (a tablet evoking the law) upon which is inscribed the date of the American Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776. A broken chain lies at her feet. The statue is an icon of freedom and of the United States: a welcoming signal to immigrants arriving from abroad.
