When I was in Bolivia I was desperate to escape the tourist gadgets that locals sell everywhere as indigenous art on street stands. I went to La Paz hoping for a change but at a first glance I saw the same old wooden sculptures of lamas and small miniature dolls. I did not give up and after looking around for a while i discovered the right place: If you want to see local art and buy it for cheap you have to leave the center of town. The area around the olimpic stadium of Hermando Siles is full of small hidden art galleries, bars and caffees that operate as part time art exposition places. You can find anything from an incomprehensible modern painting filled with dotted sprinkles of colours to a sculpture and again a painting refering to more traditional elements of the bolivian and south american cultural heritage. Don't forget to bargain before paying.
