Quito has a long history dating back to the pre-Incan period and traces can be found through the old mountain trading trails and in the Colonial side where there is an architectural diversity that is ever so interesting to disclose and appreciate in town!
The Old Town of Quito holds in its centre, which is the heart also of the Colonial period, offers many testimonies, for instance in the Plaza de la Independencia: in its Southwest side there's also the Catedral Metropolitana and Josè Antonio Sucre, the number two of men in South America's independence battles, is buried here.
There's a long archway to the Northwest which lines the front of the Palacio de Gobierno (the Government Palace). The balconies over the plaza were originally from France, from the Palace of Les Tullieres in Paris: a gift of the French Government soon after the French Revolution.
The Archibishop's Palace just on the Northeast side now houses a series of small shops and boutiques. It is definetely worth a peek during your walk in art, architecture and history! Worth also seeing is what is said to be the most beautiful church in the Americas and it's definetely among the most ornate: La Compania. There are seven tons of gold (and you won't be spending so much to enjoy this city for sure!) ended up on the ceiling, walls and altars.
Overall the quantity of affordable art all over the town is amazing and you'll taste the entwined history of Quito interconnected with styles and cultures from all over Europe. The Incan traces scattered all over the town and its outskirts.
