If you are searching for an eco-tourist’s idea of paradise then the sustainable rainforest village of Kuranda ticks plenty of the right boxes. The picturesque mountain retreat lies just 25km northwest of Cairns in the far north of Queensland and... more is surrounded by a stunning World Heritage rainforest. Kuranda is well known to many as the Village in the Rainforest and visitors have been coming to the area for more than 100 years. The original attraction was to come and admire the impressive and awe inspiring Barron Falls while many artisans were drawn to the regions outstanding natural beauty and decided to set up home there, leading to what you can enjoy today, a vibrant arts and craft culture. Best of both worlds Many tourists visit the area for two reasons in particular, the breath-taking natural beauty of the surroundings and the relaxed atmosphere of the unique local markets where many items can be found with a sustainable ethic behind them, when you visit Kuranda, you certainly feel like you are getting the best of both worlds.  Skyrail To really appreciate the outstanding natural beauty of the landscape visitors need to take a ride on the Skyrail rainforest cableway, which will take you on a truly memorable journey through this mightily impressive World Heritage listed tropical rainforest. The Skyrail covers some 7.5km and traverses across the McAlister Range, directly through the Barron Gorge National Park, taking you from Kuranda to the Caravonica terminal. It is little wonder that many people consider the Skyrail to be without question, one of the world’s most beautiful rainforest experiences. As with all rainforest activities, it is important to take out travel insurance.  There are so many things to see and do at Kuranda and it is a unique experience in many ways. Whether you walk through the rainforest or take the Skyrail or even the scenic railway, you are sure to capture a lasting memory of an area that is so full of natural wonders and enchanting scenery.  Walking tracks If you do not have the required head for heights or simply want to experience the natural beauty of the area from above and also on the ground, then there are numerous walking tracks and trails that you can follow. There is sure to be a journey that you can take that will be suitable for all ages and levels of fitness, so you can choose to take a gentle stroll through the rainforest or challenge yourself with a more adventurous and strenuous hike to the Barron Falls Lookout, where you will be instantly rewarded for your efforts with some amazing views.  The markets The markets attract many visitors to the area every year and you can traverse between the original market that was started out in 1978 as a collection of wares sold by Hippie Artists and crafts people and the new markets that started out in 2006. You will find a rustic atmosphere greets you and you can browse an eclectic mix of locally designed and produced fashions, hand crafted bespoke jewellery and items made by specialist craftsmen such as leather workers and woodworkers. Strolling around these market stalls in such a unique atmosphere is something you should definitely make time for when you visit Kuranda.
