The Girondins were a group with political interests born during the French Revolution but put down during Robespierre's Terror.
For this reason, since 1881, the city of Bordeaux wanted to commemorate its activists who fell under the guillotin, with the construction of a monument in Place des Quinconces, between 1894 and 1902. The work (also called Columns of the Girondins) is a simbolic tribute to democracy, designed by the architect Victor Rich, it's a column of 43 meters high and topped by a bronze statue rappresenting Freedom who breaks the chains.
