No longer the Bastille, but with the imposing columns of Juliette in memory of all the fallen, the Bastille is one of the liveliest districts in Paris, thanks to the Opera and many bars and restaurants that overlook the square and the surrounding streets.

The Bastille was a prison in Paris, formerly known as Bastille Saint-Antoine – Number 232, Rue Saint Antoine, and is best known for the storming of the Bastille in 14 July, 1789 along with the Tennis Court Oath, the beginning... more of the French Revolution. The French national holiday which is celebrated annually on 14th July is commonly known in English as Bastille Day. Bastille is a French word, which means castle or bastion. The Bastille was built in 1370-1383 by Charles V of France during the Hundred Years War. Built as an irregular rectangle with eight towers, 70 meters long and 30 meters wide, it is surrounded by a broad moat.
