Stuttgart Monuments and Historic Buildings: Altes Schloss
Built around the year 950, when Stuttgart was still a small settlement and a resting place for long horseback journeys, the Altes Schloss (Old Castle) is a historical monument, in which there is also a museum.
During the fourteenth century the castle became the official residence of the Württemberg family, which at the end of the XVI century turned it into a large residence in the Renaissance style.
Extensively damaged by fire in 1931 and bombing during the Second World War, it was only reopened in 1969 after extensive renovation had returned it to its original state.
The museum inside, on the side of Karlsplatz, is dedicated to Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg, a citizen of Stuttgart who attempted to assassinate Hitler in 1944, and who was executed as a result of the famous Operation Valkyrie.
