Besides being a huge complex of warehouses for storage of goods that were transport from the port, Speicherstadt was once a real commercial city with offices, banks, a post office and a power plant.
Today Speicherstadt, or "the city of warehouses", is a neighborhood of the city of Hamburg. It became part of the city in 1888 when Hamburg joined the customs system of the German Empire. The museum recreates the storerooms as they were. They were stocked with everything: tobacco, Oriental carpets, coffee, spices, tea, cocoa. An exhibition of historical pictures documents the process of building this huge complex.
