Situated in the Aegean Sea, 200 km south-east of the mainland, is the of small, circular archipelago of volcanic islands known as Santorini. The largest of the islands is Thera.
The breathtaking natural beauty and sophisticated nightlife have made it a world-class tourist destination. The estimated population of the island is around 14,000.
Around 3,500 years ago, Santorini experienced a massive volcanic eruption, which is beliebed to have caused the destruction of the Minoan society on the island of Crete.
The eruption created a huge sea-filled caldera at the centre of the island, surrounded by layers of volcanic ash hundreds of feet deep.

In and around these, you can visit numerous examples of the small picturesque domed chuches, so representative of Greek island culture. A popular pastime for tourists are visits to the vineyards and production centres of the island’s small but thriving wine industry. Here you can sample, and purchase, a range of Santorini’s delicious and distinctive wines. The main industry though is tourism, and there is an excellent infrustructure including access to black sand beaches, sailing, waterskiing and, of course, diving in the deep lagoon. There are also many tavernas and restaurants where you can enjoy tpical Greek cuisine and the delicious seafood specialities of the island.

Finally, you can hire a donkey from the local farmers to climb back up ... it's fantastic!

Overall Guide : Visit Akrotiri, known of course for the famous ruins from the Minoan period. Perissa is one of the most cosmic beaches of Santorini island with many bars, good music and water sports.

Overall Guide : The island is beautiful! Especially for couples in love! :) The food is very good and there are beautiful restaurants. The transport is excellent, and if you don't want to hire a private vehicle, Thira provide buses that go everywhere! ... Leggi tutto I highly recommend it! I also recommend the Mama Thira restaurant where you can try local delicacies!
