Rhodes walls are rightly considered to be a real military architecture masterpiece. They are made of a double wall that wraps up the “old town”. The building of this massive defensive complex is marked in different historical periods. The first walls were originally built in the mid V century by the inhabitants to ward off the foreign army attacks. They are made, like most of city walls, of watchtowers and bastions. Among these ones we can recommend the bastion of Saint George and the Del Carretto Bastion. The gates that used to lead to the old town are the Gate of Saint Athanasios and the Marine Gate.
