Akbar Mausoleum in Agra
Akbar’s Mausoleum is located approx. ten kilometers from Agra in Sikandra. The construction was initiated by Akbar and completed by Jahangir in 1605.
Both marble and red sandstone is used in its construction. Both Hindu and Muslim design elements are applied for this monument.
The complex is made up of two buildings, one is the mausoleum and the other is a titanic gate. These are connected by a paved walkway. The gate is called as the Buland Darwaza, which is a large archway with four marble minarets.
The gate creates a better impression than the mausoleum. Visitors must take precaution not to wait in the courtyard for a long time, as they may be pestered by the monkeys, which may become aggressive.
Akbar planned his tomb himself and chose an apt site for it. Constructing a tomb during the lifetime was a custom that the Mughals adhered to. This place can be reached by buses. Rickshaws also make a round trip to this mausoleum.
