The name of the city is kept after the name of the Pratapgarh which is the royal fort on the hills near by. The fort belonged to the old emperor Kaliprasanna Sen who ruled the city in the mid 18th century. The fort has gigantic walls and structures which display the power of the emperor. The fort also has a huge Kali Mata temple in its premises.
