Located in northwest County Mayo outside the city of Westport, the Ballycroy National Park is one of the largest expanses of peatland in Europe, as well as a unique habitat with diverse flora and fauna. First established as a national park in 1998, the park features blanket bogs, cliffs, and river habitats.
A Special Protection Area and part of the Natura 2000 network, the Ballycroy Park is also a special and important roosting, feeding, and breeding site for numerous migratory bird species. In addition, it’s Owenduff River is an important conservation area as it is the only river in Europe that drains an intact blanket bog system. Visitors who would like to check out this wonderful Irish park can do so until the end of August each year from 10:30am to 5:30pm. Access to the National Park itself can be gained by walking along the Bangor Trail from the Visitor’s Center. For more information, or to book group tours, contact +353 98 49872.
