In the middle of the Piazza del Duomo we find the Fontana dell'Elefante (the Elephant fountain) dear to the inhabitants of Catania, that is the city landmark.

The fountain is made of a molten rock elephant dating back to the Roman Age. On its back there is an Egyptian obelisk. Also this work was planned by the architect G.B.Vaccarini and represents three civilizations: the Punic one, the Egyptian one and the Christian one.

The elephant is the symbol of the Carthaginian defeat when they came to conquer the city, riding huge pachyderms.
