Catania Monuments and Historic Buildings: Porta Garibaldi
HeaderPageTitle-GetPartialViewNoCache = 0,0009768
The monument is made of a triumphal arch dating back to 1768 and planned by Stefano Ittar to celebrate the marriage between Ferdinand IV of the House of Bourbon and Caroline of Austria.
The gate, dedicated to Garibaldi is a monument loved by the inhabitants of Catania who familiarly called it "U furtino" ( the pillbox) since they link it with the memory of the previous pillbox of the Duke di Ligne, in the next via Sacchero.
The gate was a gift of the natives of Catania for the marriage between Caroline of Austria and King Ferdinand IV. In fact, it is also called porta Ferdinandea (gate of Ferdinand).
From the gate you can admire the Cathedral at the other end of via Garibaldi.
