The Romanesque neighbor of Duomo, the Chiesa e Battistero di San Giovanni e Santa Reparata has a 16th century façade and also a 12th century body. However, recent excavations show that the structure is actually five layers deep. This historical building sits on top of a much older church which served until the early 700s as the cathedral of Lucca. The cathedral in turn was built atop a 5th century AD paleo Christian Church and 6th century cemetery.
