Mantova - San Giorgio's castle
San Giorgio’s Castle, a part of the Palazzo Ducale compound, is situated in the middle of the city.
It was built in the XIV century and it shows a huge and squared structure with four towers set at every corner.
It was property of the Gonzaga family and it shows the strenght and the power of them during the Renaissance, when they made Mantova an important centre of arts and culture.
The Camera degli Sposi is one of the most beautiful rooms in the castle, especially because it ws decorated by the great artist Andrea Mantegna.
The castle had been for many years Isabella d’Este’s house, who were Francesco Gonzaga’s wife and one of the most important noble women of the Renaissance. She loved arts and literature and she always was surrounded by many artists of that time, such as Andrea Mantegna, Perugino, Leonardo da Vinci, Ludovico Ariosto and Baldassarre Castiglione, and she made Mantova one of the greatest European courts.
San Giorgio’s Castle now hosts many cultural events, such as art exhibitions which attract every year thousand of visitors.
