Prato della Valle is one of the largest squares in Europe. In the middle of the square there’s the elliptical Isola Memmia, surrounded by a double ring of statues.
Many years ago Prato della Valle was a place of square-bashings: that’s why it was called Campo di Marte. He was known, after a while, as Valle del Mercato (Market Valley), because it was the most important place where the market was set. Then, he was called Prato di Santa Giustina because of the nearness to the Church of the same name.
