Teatro Jose Peon Contreras is the oldest and also the most beautiful theater situated in Merida, Yucatan. This theater is named after Jose Peon Contreras, who was the politician, immortal poet, physician, novelist, essayist and dramatist of Yucatan. Jose was born in 1843 in Merida and died in 1907.

The theater was inaugurated after one year of his death and inspired in a neoclassic French style, the theater was inaugurated in 1908. The theater building was designed by architect, Pio Piacentini, with technical direction by Enrico Desserti and the painting of the dome being Nicolas Allegretti. The European façade was designed by Fernando Ceicola. In 2008, this theater celebrated its 100 years anniversary and if you are in Merida and are looking for some culture - this is a great place to start!
