Description

Positioned in the southern region of Amsterdam, the borough Rivierenbuurt is a historically important place the Netherlands.  The area was built in the early 20th-century, and was part of famous architect Hendrik Petrus Berlage’s “South Plan” of the metropolis.

The bridge that connects the residential east side of the Amstel River to Rivierenbuurt and Amstel Railway Station is called the Berlage Bridge.  But the most prominent building in Rivierenbuurt is definitely the skyscraper of Jan Frederik Staal (JF Steel), another world famous Dutch architect famous for deigning the Amsterdam Commodities Exchange building. Standing 12 stories high, the skyscraper was the city’s very first high-rise apartment building.

Historically, Rivierenbuurt is significant because its Jewish population was hit extraordinarily hard by the Holocaust.  13,000 of the area’s 17,000 Jews were exterminated in Nazi concentration camps.  Rivierenbuurt was also the setting of the world-famous story of Anne Frank and her family.  In 1945 the Canadians crossed the Berlage Bridge and ended the siege on Rivierendbuurt. They soon became dubbed by locals and historians alike as the “Canadian Liberators.”  This portion of Amsterdam is great for a short visit, but its historic value alone makes Rivierenbuurt worth a closer examination.
