Christchurch

The coastal city of Christchurch, situated to the north of the Banks peninsula in New Zealand’s South Island, is the capital of the Canterbury region. The city is named after the Christ Church cathedral, an Anglican cathedral built in the nineteenth century. The city’s local Māori name is Ōtautahi, but it is often called the ‘Garden City’ because of its over 740 parks and an extensive system of rivers, streams and wetlands.

Christchurch has a temperateclimate, with warm summers and cold winters. The nor’wester, a hot sea breeze that blows in summer, is characteristic to this region, which is also susceptible to smog.

With a population of over 344,100 inhabitants, Christchurch is the largest city in South Island. Its inhabitants are an eclectic mix of European, Asian, Māori and Pacific Islander communities.

Overall Guide : Despite its distinctive quaint English character, Christchurch is a vibrant city, with a lively café scene and numerous museums and cultural venues. Its iconic City Square with the cathedral, wide, tree-lined avenues, beautifully maintained gardens, ambling inner-city rivers and heritage ... Leggi tutto buildings make Christchurch a very picturesque city, where tourism is a crucial aspect of the local economy. Tourists can indulge in swimming with the rare Hector’s dolphins in Akaroa Harbour, visit the famous Mona Vale homestead and gardens, or climb the Port Hills for fantastic views of the city, the Canterbury Plains and the mighty Southern Alps. The myriad facets of Christchurch can also be explored in a historic tram ride or in a gondola. As the ‘Gateway to the Antarctic’, Christchurch has also significantly contributed to Antarctic exploration—evident in the International Antarctic Centre, where one can actually experience Antarctica.

Overall Guide : Lovely city as described, historically, but it got slammed into the ground by massive earthquakes in 2011. Therefore it no longer exists in the form described though it is in the midst of a contentious long expensive and difficult rebuild.
