Quetta is the capital of the Balochistan Province in Pakistan. Surrounded by hills on all four sides, Quetta means ‘fort’ in Pushtu, the regional language. Also referred to as the ‘fruit garden’ of Pakistan, its population stands at an estimated 750,000 inhabitants.
Quetta, enclosed by barren hills, has a dry climate with extremely cold winters and hot summers. It receives inadequate and irregular rains which affects the fertility of the region. Snowfall is experienced in winters, especially in January.
Quetta was a developing city before the earthquake of 1935. However, in recent times, it has steadily become the centre of all commercial activities in Balochistan. Many industries such as leather manufacturing, import and export, tourism and handicrafts thrive here.
