The Castle of San Giorgio is the dominant point of the city. Built by the Visigoths in the fifth century and then transformed into a fortress by the Moors in the ninth century, the castle was conquered by the Christians in 1147 and expanded to its current form in the sixteenth century, after the earthquake of 1531 which also destroyed much of the city.

The St. George's Castle is visible from a long way and dates back to an Iron Age settlement, occupied by the Romans in 205 BC. It is a 110 meters and 361 feet high hill on which the castle stands ... Vedi tutto and constitutes the central starting point of the development of Lisbon. It served as a Moorish royal residence until the first king of Portugal captured it in 1147. It was dedicated to St. George, the patron saint of England.
