The square is a triumphal arch built in 1785. It is surrounded on three sides by buildings with a large porch. At the center of the wide central pavement stands the imposing statue of King José I. The square, where once stood the Royal Palace was rebuilt by the Marquis of Pombal after the earthquake.

The Praça do comercio is situated near the Tagus River and is translated as 'Commerce Square' in English. This square is also known as Terreiro do Paco. It was the location of the Pacos da Riberia until it was destroyed ... Vedi tutto by a major earthquake in 1755. After the natural calamity, it was remodeled as part of the Pombaline Downtown, as per the orders of Marquis of Pombal.
