The Cathedral-Basilica of St. James the Apostle, in the square of the same name, is the main Catholic church of the town, and only became so in 1950.
The building dates back to the fourteenth century, when the small fishing community that made up Bilbao decided to build a new church, which over time has been enriched with a mixture of styles, from the original Gothic of the sixteenth century, to the nineteenth century neo-Gothic.
Catedral de Bilbao is an Cathedral in Bilbao, Basque Country. Constructed in the sixteenth century, it can be seen from most streets in Bilbao, with the cloister on the west and the porch on the northwest. With change in... more time, it is to some extent hidden behind new tall buildings. However, this monument is known as one of the oldest sights in Bilbao. This historic building could be known as the foundation stone on which the city was built, as the seven streets joined at the Gothic style Cathedral, dates back to the St. James era.
