The Cathedral-Basilica of St. James the Apostle, in the square of the same name, is the main Catholic church of the town, and only became so in 1950.
The building dates back to the fourteenth century, when the small fishing community that made up Bilbao decided to build a new church, which over time has been enriched with a mixture of styles, from the original Gothic of the sixteenth century, to the nineteenth century neo-Gothic.
